Three Grand Cherokees Parked in a Desert

Rairdon’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep of Bellingham is proud to announce that both the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L have earned TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). TSP+ is the highest possible rating awarded by the IIHS. The rating applies to 2023 Grand Cherokee models built after March 2023 and 2023 Grand Cherokee L’s built after May 2023.

Both models earned a “good” – the highest possible rating – in four crashworthiness tests required to achieve TOP SAFETY PICK:

  • Small overlap front – passenger-side
  • Moderate overlap front – original test
  • Side impact – updated test

Crash Prevention Technology Ratings

To earn the “Plus” part of the rating, vehicles are judged on the effectiveness of their crash prevention technologies. In this area, the Grand Cherokee earned a “Superior” rating for its Front crash vehicle-to-vehicle prevention systems and “Advanced” ratings for both the night and day tests of Front crash vehicle-to-pedestrian prevention. The 3-row Grand Cherokee L earned the same, except that it was upgraded to a “Superior” rating for the night version of vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

“Achieving the highest possible safety rating from the IIHS is consistent with the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s place as the most awarded SUV in history,” says Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s singular blend of safety technology and extreme-condition 4×4 capability affords our customers the level of driving confidence they deserve. And with the appeal of two- and three-row versions, that driving confidence is available to a wider customer demographic.”

A TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating also requires an “acceptable” or “good” grade in IIHS lighting evaluations, across all trims. The Premium LED reflective headlamp configurations for both models achieve an “acceptable” rating, which is upgraded to “good” when for models equipped with high-beam assist.

Comprehensive Safety Technologies

Both Grand Cherokee models are equipped with over 110 safety and security features, including less common features such as InterSection Collision Assist, which helps detect vehicles approaching from the driver’s left and right when nearing a crossroad. The system delivers audible and visual alerts if it detects a possible imminent collision. Another less common safety feature is Drowsy Driver Detection, which tracks behavior consistent with that of a drowsy driver, such as lane deviation. When certain thresholds are reached, the system responds with audio and/or visual cautions for the driver to pull over

“At Jeep, we are not content to rest on our laurels as the pre-eminent SUV brand,” Morrison says. “Whenever possible, we seek to leverage advanced technology to enhance the ownership experience of our customers.”.

The Grand Cherokee line has always been a premium vehicle that offered unprecedented capability, comfort, performance, and safety for active families, and the IIHS awards are a welcome recognition of their safety bonafides.
